David de Gea apologises for Manchester United’s loss to Everton

It’s unlikely to be the last Manchester United apology of the evening

Manchester United captain David de Gea has apologised for his and his team’s performance after they were trashed 4-0 by Everton on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer apologised to the away fans at Goodison Park after the game and used the post-match press conference to hit out at his players’ reaction to the embarrassing defeat, implying that a number of them would be unlikely to still be playing for United next season.

Now, de Gea has followed his manager in apologising to the club’s fanbase for the entire team’s anonymity in the Easter Sunday clash.

Writing in an Instagram Story after the game, de Gea said: “Difficult to put what I am feeling today into words. As captain I want to say that the performance of the team today, on top of the result, was not up to the standard expected when you pull on this shirt.

“We know that we have to improve but words mean little: we have to give everything for this club. That you for your unconditional support.”

Following the defeat, it is likely United will need to win all four of their remaining games – starting with Wednesday’s derby against Manchester City – to stand any chance of finishing in a Champions League spot.

The United manager looked far from happy in the aftermath of the defeat. Asked in the post-match press conference if his players’ reaction in the dressing room afterwards had shown they cared about playing for the club, Solskjaer puffed out his cheeks and replied: “I don’t know, I don’t know.”

Solskjaer then implied that some of his players would be unlikely to still be at the club next season.

“We have to stick together as a team, we can’t change the whole squad, it’s one step as a time,” he said.

“I’ve said all along, I’m going to be successful here and there are players there who won’t be part of that successful team. But there are players there, of course, many of these who do have it.”
