Former West Ham United midfielder Trevor Sinclair has suggested that David de Gea’s time at Manchester United is ‘probably going to end quite shortly’ following the arrival of interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The Spaniard has kept 158 clean sheets in 460 appearances for the Red Devils, but ex-England international Sinclair thinks that his playing style may not suit the tactical philosophy Rangnick will try and implement.

Trevor Sinclair: David de Gea’s time at Man United could soon be over.

Speaking about de Gea’s long-term future at the club, Sinclair suggested that the 31-year-old’s time at Old Trafford could soon come to an end.

“So De Gea’s time at Man United is probably going to end quite shortly,” he told talkSPORT.

De Gea was involved in one of the strangest goals in Premier League history earlier this week, with Emile Smith Rowe’s strike bouncing past him as he laid injured on the floor with his back to the game.

However, because it was team-mate Fred that stood on his ankle, the goal stood – with VAR confirming that referee Martin Atkinson had little choice but to allow the goal.

Sinclair stated that the goalkeeper ‘lacked bravery’ in the situation, insisting that he should have gotten back to his feet.

Sinclair: De Gea lacks ‘bravery’.

“They got it right. We’ve all been smashed in the ankle, it’s not going to get any worse,” the former England winger said.

“You can get back to your feet, wait for the ball to go out of play, then get the assistance you need medically.

“I can’t believe how lacking in bravery De Gea is. I’m really disappointed, his teammates will be disappointed, the coaching staff and all the fans will be disappointed.

“Sometimes when you go on the pitch, you’ve got to take a bit of pain – and that wasn’t good enough.

“And he’s cost his team a goal because the shot from Smith Rowe wasn’t great.”

Thankfully for de Gea and United, the incident did not cost them any points after a Bruno Fernandes strike and Cristiano Ronaldo brace ensured the Red Devils came away from the contest with all three points.

Rangnick will take charge of United for the first time on Sunday when his side welcome Crystal Palace to Old Trafford.
