Damien Delaney’s amusing anecdote about Dimitri Payet’s stunning free kick only makes it better

Congrats Damien Delaney, you’ve somehow managed to make that free kick even better.

Anyone who saw West Ham’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend knows exactly the set-piece we’re talking about. However, in case you missed it, check out this brilliant fan footage of Dimitri Payet’s physics-defying free that went sailing into Wayne Hennessey’s net.

When Payet struck the free kick, Crystal Palace’s Damien Delaney admitted that he thought it was destined to fire well over the bar, speaking to Yahoo.

“When he hit it, as it went over the wall ‘I thought that one’s going into Row Z’, I swear to God.”

The Irish defender even recounted a great story of one of his teammates getting cocky and taunting the West Ham man over what he thought was a wayward shot.

“I think even someone in the wall shouted ‘see ya’ to Payet. I think Wayne Hennessey probably thought it as well.”

Let that be a lesson to everyone, even if a Payet free kick looks like it’s not going on target, you should still probably wait until you exhale that sweet sigh of relief.
