The Denmark player is recovering from a cardiac arrest

Christian Eriksen will be fitted with a heart starter device after suffering from a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s first group game against Finland.

After he collapsed to the turf, he was given emergency CPR which saved his life, before being taken to hospital in Copenhagen, where he was stabilised.

He has since spoken to his teammates and posted a message to the world thanking them for their support and well wishes, and confirming that he is “fine, given the circumstances.”

Denmkar’s team doctor Morten Boesen has now said: “After Christian has been through different heart examinations it has been decided that he should have an ICD (heart starter). This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances.

“Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment.”

“We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy the following time.”

An ICD is fitted to people with abnormal heart rhythms, helping to regulate them by sending electrical pulses.
