Christian Eriksen appeared to be hit by a coin during a post-match interview after making a sensational return to international football with Denmark.

The 30-year-old made his first appearance for his national side after suffering a cardiac arrest in the summer during Euro 2020.

The midfielder, who signed for Premier League outfit Brentford in January after leaving Inter Milan, was back on the scoresheet for Denmark as they faced-off against the Netherlands at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday.

Eriksen’s first Denmark appearance since the cardiac arrest in the summer.

Despite losing the tie 4-2, Eriksen enjoyed a dream return as he scored with his first touch within minutes of coming onto the pitch.

However, the former Tottenham Hotspur man was struck by a coin during his post-match interview. It hit Eriksen on the arm, which prompted the midfielder to look down at the object.

Speaking about his goal on his return to international football, he said: “I was happy the ball came to me. I thought it was a lovely finish and to start my international comeback like this is a perfect way.”

He added: “If you take away the result, I’m one happy man. To go through what I’ve been through, being back is a wonderful feeling.”

The Brentford man – who won his 110th cap after coming on as a second-half substitute – received a standing ovation from both sets of supporters, with Dutch manager Louis van Gaal also applauding.

Denmark have qualified for the World Cup in Qatar later this year after topping their group, which included Scotland.

Eriksen is ‘looking forward’ to the World Cup later this year

Eriksen is hopeful of being included in Denmark’s final squad for the tournament this winter.

“I am looking forward to playing in Qatar but there is a lot of games in between,” he said.

Steven Bergwijn scored twice for the Netherlands, with Nathan Ake and Memphis Depay also getting on the scoresheet for the home side. Jannik Vestergaard joined Eriksen in scoring for Denmark.
