Chelsea fans were heard singing the name of their outgoing owner during the minute’s applause to show solidarity for Ukraine during their game against Burnley on Saturday.
Abramovich confirmed earlier this week that he would be selling Chelsea after almost two decades of ownership at Stamford Bridge in light of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Given the oligarch’s alleged close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin, the threat of sanctions left Abramovich with no choice but to list the club for sale.
The Russian had originally passed on the “stewardship and care” to the trustees of Chelsea, but reversed his decision and announced his intention to move away from the club entirely.
Premier League sides around the country have been showing their support for the people of Ukraine in different ways. Supporters have been spotted bringing Ukrainian flags whilst collections have also taken place to send clothing, food and more essentials to refugees fleeing the country.
Ahead of the game at Turf Moor on Saturday though, fans of the away end could be heard chanting the name of Roman Abramovich as a mark of support for the club’s soon-to-be former owner.

Despite his close ties with the Russian elite, Abramovich has received an unwavering amount of support from fans of the west London club – largely due to the copious amounts of silverware won during his tenure.
Bids for Chelsea are expected to come in within the next couple of days with Abramovich looking to sell for somewhere in the region of £3bn.
It’s been reported that up to 10 credible parties have registered their interest to buy Chelsea.
