A comedy of errors at Wembley
Charlton’s goalkeeper Dillion Phillips and defender Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr were involved in an embarrassing own-goal in the fourth minute of the side’s League One playoff final game against Sunderland after Sarr attempted to pass the ball back to his keeper.
For reason only known to him, despite being under no pressure from the opposition, the French defender decided to drill the ball back towards his goal, rather than, y’know, playing it back calmy and at a reasonable pace.
That said, you can’t give all the credit to Sarr for the goal. Phillips played his part too. The goalie for some reason let the ball roll past him, leaving him indignantly scrambling after the ball as it rolled over the goal line. It only gets worse the more you watch it.
In netting the ball, Sarr became the first Charlton player to score an own goal at Wembley since Bert Turner in the 1946 FA Cup final against Derby. The south-east London side went on to lose that match 4-1, which doesn’t bode well for them.
