Celtic fans took exception to Jurgen Klopp’s claim about Steven Gerrard

Jurgen Klopp has wished Steven Gerrard all the best.

The Liverpool manager was asked about Gerrard’s appointment as Rangers manager on Friday, saying Celtic fans will be wowed by their arch-rivals landing such a high-profile name.

Last week, Celtic clinched their seventh successive Scottish Premiership title with a 5-0 thumping of Rangers at Celtic Park.

The Hoops will have the chance to win a second straight domestic treble under Brendan Rodgers when they take on Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final on May 19.

Suffice to say, Celtic fans aren’t easily intimidated by the latest developments at their Old Firm foes. Klopp, however, thinks differently.

“If Stevie thinks it’s the right moment then I’m sure it is the right moment,” Klopp told Liverpool’s website.

“Rangers are a big club in a little bit of a difficult moment still but a much better moment than a few years ago. It could be a really good fit, it could be nice, coming closer to Celtic.

“I’m pretty sure Celtic supporters don’t think, ‘Thank God, Steven Gerrard.’ They think, ‘Wow, Steven Gerrard.’ That can always be a sign.

“Stevie is one of the best midfielders ever. Now he wants to be a manager. He has the passion and the knowledge about football. All the rest is to learn. I’m sure he learned a lot in the last year. I’m really happy for him to have the opportunity.”

A fresh face to the cut-throat world of football management, utterly untested at this level, Celtic fans have openly expressed their delight at Gerrard’s appointment.

The more fervent Celtic supporters are rubbing their hands with glee at a potential catastrophe, while the more equable sections of the fanbase are genuinely intrigued as to how it will pan out. But they are certainly not wowed, and they are not fearing Rangers threatening their position atop Scottish football.
