Basel have wasted little time in celebrating their Champions League progress at the expense of Liverpool.
The Swiss side added the Reds to their list of recent English scalps, drawing 1-1 at Anfield to ensure they reached the knockout stages and condemning Brendan Rodgers’ side to the Europa League.
The club beat Premier League favourites Chelsea twice in last season’s Champions League and knocked Tottenham out of the Europa League the previous year.
In honour of their English treble, Basel have posted a cartoon to Instagram with players from the two London clubs carrying a dazed Liverpool player off the field. There is no sign, however, of any Manchester United player, the victory that knocked Alex Ferguson’s men out of the Chanpions League in 2011 seemingly ancient history.
It’s really pretty clever and in no way mean-spirited, although it’s hard to imagine too many Liverpool fans seeing the funny side quite yet.
