It was always going to be a tough ask to find a suitable candidate to sport Barcelona’s iconic number 6 jersey.

We personally can’t imagine anyone other than Xavi donning the shirt that he held since the 2001/02 season and the Catalan side were careful to offer the jersey to another fan favourite rather than hold onto it until they sign a new player when they are officially able to make new signings in January.

Right back Dani Alves, who has held the number 22 since Eric Abidal left the club, was unveiled as Barca’s new number 6 when the squad numbers for the upcoming season were revealed on Twitter this morning.

Alves is one of the few players who fans wouldn’t criticise for inheriting the number as he has been a stalwart at the Camp Nou since signing from Sevilla in 2008.

The Brazilian posted a picture of himself with his new shirt this afternoon.
