He can pick a team almost as well as he picks a pass
From growing magnificent beards to making his own wine to actual football, Andrea Pirlo has proven to be very good at anything he turns his hand to.
So, how does he do when it comes to picking an all-time Champions League XI? Not too bad at all is the answer.
Twice a winner of the trophy, he is very well qualified to pick his dream team and he kicks it off with team-mate Gigi Buffon in goal.
Pirlo’s back four is Phillip Lahm, Paolo Maldini, Cafu and Fabio Cannavaro, which is undeniably top class.
In midfield the only English player to make the grade pops up. Pirlo has spoken before about his love for Paul Scholes. In his book Pirlo referred to the United man as ‘the only great English midfielder in my career’ so it is no surprise to see Pirlo choose the two-time winner of the competition in his side.
Pirlo says of Scholes: ‘ [He] didn’t just play the game, he thought about the game. You could see every pass, every decision, was based on his intelligence and understanding.’
Alongside Scholes, Pirlo has plumped for Xavi and Gennaro Gattuso and that leaves a three-man forward line of Lionel Messi, Kaka and Fillipo Inzaghi.
You could, maybe, argue that Cristiano Ronaldo, the original Ronaldo or Zinedine Zidane could be fitted in here somewhere but as we said, we really can’t argue with the great Andrea Pirlo.
