A huge day

Patrick McCarry

‘Right now, this is my night, this is Ireland’s night.’

Conor McGregor was overcome with emotions, and gratitude, in the moments after he clinched the UFC featherweight interim title, in Las Vegas.

The Irishman captured UFC gold after beating Chad Mendes by TKO in the second round.

He dropped to his knees after the fight was stopped, and he was declared winner. Joe Rogan caught up with McGregor and found him on the brink of tears.

‘The Irish people that supported me, I swear to God, I did it for us,’ he declared.

In the post-match press conference, McGregor paid tribute to the Irish fans that travelled to Las Vegas.

‘I’m extremely grateful to everybody that saved up and sacrificed to come over.’
