This will go down really well.

Martin O’Neill has to decide on a new captain with Seamus Coleman out injured for the foreseeable future.

James McClean was given the honour on his 50th cap against Mexico on Friday morning.

But O’Neill has installed Jonathan Walters as captain ahead of the friendly against Uruguay in Sunday night’s international friendly against Uruguay.

Walters made his debut for the Republic of Ireland back in 2010 under Giovanni Trapattoni and has been a constant feature ever since, earning 47 caps in his time.

He is a fan favourite, especially after his brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoff that sent the Boys in Green to Euro 2016.

It does, however, remain to be seen if he will captain the side against Austria on Sunday week.
