Gaelic Park was absolutely rocking for the championship opener between New York and Sligo.
It was a valiant effort from the hosts, who kept the scoreline tight for most of the match. They trailed by just two points heading into the break, but after the restart they kicked things up a gear.
Eugen McVerry’s goal about 10 minutes into the second half brought the scoreline level and a couple of minutes later, Ross Wherity kicked New York into the lead by a solitary point at 1-12 to 0-14.

Realising that an upset was very much possible, Sligo began to take charge of the game. The Exiles may be kicking themselves for racking up so many wides on home territory, but in the end, the better side emerged victorious.
The American club only scored one more point for the remainder of the match, while Sligo bagged themselves a goal through Kyle Cawley and a heap o points. In the end, the final scoreline read 1-21 to 1-13 in favour of Sligo.
After the full time whistle blew, Marty Morrissey, who provided commentary for the game on RTE Radio One, shared a little nugget of information with his listeners.
He confirmed what Niall Carew had told Colm Parkinson on the GAA Hour, that the Connacht outfit will remain in the state for the next couple of days to train. Rockland GAA club in Orangeburg, NY will be where the team are basing themselves for the camp.
