Troy Parrott was brought back down to earth on the weekend, after he missed a last-play penalty in AZ Alkmaar's 1-0 loss to FC Twente.
After a month where he wrote himself into Irish sport folklore with his five-goal heroics against Portugal and Hungary, it was a sobering moment for him, as his paneka attempt sailed high over the crossbar.

After the game, Alkmaar manager Marten Maartens acknowledged the poor penalty attempt, but praised his man for how he handled himself after the game.
He said: "It was poor finishing.
"If he chipped it there and scored, he'd be doing well. Troy took responsibility; he gave it his all today, but didn't finish well. He's already taken responsibility for that with the rest of the team.
"He took responsibility for the loss of points, and rightly so. He can do much better than this, he realises that himself. It wasn't good enough today. He's still a striker, and he is creative. We'll definitely talk about it.”
Teammate Peer Koopmeiners also had sympathy for the Irishman.
He added: "Ultimately, he apologised, and now it's up to us to take some responsibility for it."
The result leaves Alkmaar fourth in Eredivisie.
