Eleven Irish women including rugby international set to travel to Australia for AFL trial

Cora Staunton made waves last year during her foray into the AFL women’s game and will make the trip down under yet again for the 2019 season.

Her Mayo teammate Sarah Rowe has also committed to joining the newly founded organization and will join up with Collingwood in the coming months.

It has now been reported that 18 women will travel to Melbourne this week to take part in the Crosscoders International Rookie Camp, 11 of the 18 participants are indeed Irish sports women who hail from a variety of different codes.

Alongside ladies football, players from camogie, rugby union and soccer have been touted as potential rookies coming into the league.

The news was announced yesterday via the CrossCoders facebook page.

Mike Currane, who is an Official Ambassador for Crosscoders will take the Irish group out to Melbourne on Thursday evening. Speaking on the announcement he said.

“It is extremely exciting for the players, with some potential life-changing opportunities ahead, and a once in a lifetime experience in terms of the camp itself,” 

“I am thrilled that this many Irish girls have been selected and it is a sign of the level of talent that we have here in Ireland.”

The 11 Irish players expected to make the trip to Melbourne later this week are:

Amanda Maginn (Ulster Rugby)
Eimear Gallagher (Donegal)

Mairead Coyne (Connacht Rugby/Ireland)
Mary Ryan (Tipperary camogie)
Muireann Atkinson (Monaghan)
Yvonne McMonagle (Donegal)
