Un De Sceaux is stunned as Balko Des Flos wins Ryanair Chase

Shaun Stephens

Un De Sceaux has let down punters across the country.

Do you hear that sound? That’s the sound of punters across the country ripping up their betting slips as heavy favourite Un De Sceaux is beaten in the Ryanair chase by 8/1 shot Balko Des Flos.

Un De Sceaux could do nothing to stop Balko Des Flos as he stormed to the finish line to win the Ryanair Chase in dramatic fashion. The heavy favourite could not keep pace with Balko Des Flos and the Ryanair chase provided us with the upset of the festival so far.

Davy Russell deserves credit for a magnificent ride but people have been left with a sour taste in their mouth after a disappointing performance from Un De Sceaux. Cue card was also involved in the Ryanair chase and that was another disappointing performance with questions now arising if that was Cue Cards last race.

The race could have been a different outcome had Ruby Walsh been on Un De Sceaux but as we know Ruby Walsh is now out for the rest of the festival with a broken leg. Paul Townend has come in for heavy criticism and he did not cover himself in glory with that ride. Reaction from the race has seen praise being heaped on Ruby Walsh even though he didn’t take part in the race. Many believe this is a prime example of how important a jockey is.

Un De Sceaux was heavily backed with one man saying he saw someone place as much as ₤5,000 on the horse. We wouldn’t like to be that man waking up in the morning.
