Results from all over the country with big upsets in Roscommon, Westmeath and Longford

Niall McIntyre

There were upsets in Westmeath and Roscommon in yet another big weekend of club GAA action.

The Downs de-throned a three-in-a-row-seeking St Loman’s side in Westmeath, to win their first county title since 2005. Luke Loughlin top scored for the winners while Niall Mitchell, better known as a hurler, scored the game-changing goal Lar Wall’s side in dreadful conditions in TEG Cusack Park.

Elsewhere, in the TG4 televised game, Portarlington destroyed neighbours O’Dempseys as they succeeded in their three-in-a-row bid in Laois. Colm Murphy stood out for Martin Murphy’s side. Meanwhile, the Naas footballers made it two-in-a-row in Kildare, with Alex Beirne winning the man-of-the-match award for his display in St Conleth’s Park.

The Mayo hurling championship went back to Tooreen while Cargin defeated St Mary’s Aghagallon in the Antrim SFC. Other notable results included Na Fianna’s win over Cuala in the Dublin SHC, which means the same teams will contest the hurling and football finals in the capital.

In Kerry, East Kerry advanced despite Sean O’Shea’s heroics while Templenoe were also defeated by the Mid-Kerry divisional side in the other quarter final. In Roscommon, Boyle had a great win over St Brigid’s to reach their first Roscommon final since they last won it, way back in 1927.
