Lee Chin beats ten men and breaks Kilanerin hearts with moment of pure and utter leadership

Niall McIntyre

Chin to the rescue.

In a faraway land, Paul Galvin will be dreaming. Unfortunately for the Kerryman, in a fantasy world he must remain if you’re talking Lee Chin as a Wexford footballer.

But look, at least you can look on and admire.

Most GAA people are aware of Chin’s ability as a footballer. The skill evident from his time with Wexford Youths, the athleticism clear for all to see.

For now though, Davy Fitz and the small ball have won the battle for affections. A hurling superstar and an All-Star in waiting at this stage, it would come as a monumental shock if Chin were to do a U-turn toward the big ball.

The Gaelic football days are well behind him from an inter-county perspective but the skill is still there. Chin is still living large on the Wexford club scene.

All you’d have to do is ask anybody from the Sarsfields club. The town team were out in their final group game in the Wexford SFC on Saturday afternoon and the state of play was simple.

A result or they were in hot water. A win or a draw or they were staring relegation in the face with a nervy game left to rescue their season.

Chin spared them of the high pulse. With only a minute left to play in their clash with Kilanerin, Sarsfields looked down and out. Three points down and with Kilanerin forming a blanket, there looked to be no way through.

A late free gave them a lifeline. Lee Chin gave them the answer. Over about 20 bodies he soared high to catch well over his head. There was plenty of work still to do.

Chin took ten men for a run with him, before slotting the ball gracefully into the far corner. Sarsfields live to fight another day.

There’s a relegation final on tick for Kilanerin but Sarsfields are safe.
