A picture of Andy Moran from his IT Sligo days is the throwback of all throwbacks

The understatement of the year

Niall McIntyre

It’s hard not to love Andy Moran, and that even goes for people outside of Mayo too.

Mayo fans dominated their Dublin opponents during Friday night’s GAA Hour live at the academy. They were typically enthusiastic, hopeful and any hint of a positive comment about their men, they went absolutely bananas.

Host Colm Parkinson mentioned that Andy Moran was having an incredible year for Mayo, given the fact that he is a 33-year-old veteran of the game, now, and those from the west of Ireland nearly roared the house down.

What’s not to like about Moran, in fairness? Andy’s been there through the all the struggles, through all the good times they’ve had,  and throughout his 13-year career in the green and red, he’s always given them the same thing. They can always rely on Andy.

Selfless running, deadly finishing, an admirable attitude. His passion for the Yew county is visible for all to see.

This year has arguably been his best year so far, with 3-21 from play notched by the Ballaghaderreen man so far in this year’s Championship, everything he has touched has turned to gold.

If anybody deserves an All-Ireland, and on top of that, if anybody deserves the Footballer of the year award, it’s definitely that man.

Despite having seen it all, Moran’s hunger hasn’t weaned, and he seems to be getting faster and stronger as the years go by.

The fact that he places huge value in MMA training, and body flexibility, as he revealed earlier in the week will only lengthen this man’s career even more.

Age is but a number for Andy, and if you rewind back to his college days in Sligo I.T, you’ll see him rocking the oldest hairstyle in the book.

The classic afro, which may have derived from the similar tendencies of his college friend teammate Tom Parsons.

Andy sports a much cleaner cut nowadays, but the Mayo fans would love him even if he dyed his hair blue and navy.
