WATCH: Danny Murphy on the decision Tottenham must make this summer

This summer could be crucial

Clearly, this has been a disappointing couple of weeks for those connected with Tottenham Hotspur.

A semi-final defeat at the hands of Chelsea ended their hopes of winning the FA Cup and, after West Ham beat them on Friday night, it now seems certain that Antonio Conte’s men will beat them to the Premier League crown, too.

Many Spurs fans will take comfort from the fact that, despite looking set to complete another trophy-less season, Mauricio Pochettino – one of the best managers in the league – has assembled an exciting crop of players at the club, many of which are still years away from reaching the peak of their powers. If they do stay together, it’s difficult to imagine them not winning a trophy at some point.

If.

In the aftermath of their loss at the London Stadium, former midfielder Danny Murphy stressed the importance of Tottenham keeping their best players at the club when appearing on Saturday’s Match of the Day.

“The simple case for Spurs is keeping their best players,” Murphy told Gary Lineker.

When asked by Lineker if Spurs had some tough decisions to make regarding paying their best players higher wages, Murphy continued: “They’re not at the level that City, United and Chelsea are – maybe even Liverpool – in terms of paying wages.

“They’ve got to make a choice which is difficult because they’re funding a new stadium.”
