Shane Supple lines out for GAA team hours after starring in Bohemians victory

“If you get the right goalkeeper, it will get you 12, 13, 14 points a season.”

Damian Lynch was impressed with what he saw from Shane Supple last night and he was not the only one.

The Bohemians goalkeeper pulled off a stunning save to deny Shamrock Rovers’ Gary Shaw a goal in the closing stages. Shaw made a firm connection and his header was heading into the top corner when Supple clawed it out from under the crossbar.

“I don’t know how he managed to keep that out,” Lynch later admitted to eir Sport. “Unbelievable save!”

The save turned out to be pivotal as it kept the scores level before Bohs snatched all three points with a 98th minute winner from Darragh Leahy.

Supple and his Bohemians teammates would have left Tallaght Stadium a little after 10:30pm on Friday but the goalkeeper was back up in decent time to join his St Brigid’s team for a Dublin club championship match against Ballymun Kickhams.

Supple was listed as sub goalkeeper, with Stephen Moore down to start on the team-sheet, but he was drafted in from the start.

It goes to show how driven and committed to both causes the 30-year-old is. Two crucial games, one football, one GAA, in less than 24 hours but Supple stepped forward. Ballymun and Dublin forward Dean Rock did beat him to the ball when teammate Ted Furman put in a dangerous high ball and Brigid’s found themselves 1-6 to 0-2 down after 20 minutes.

Faced with a similar situation, minutes later and with Furman contesting for the ball, Supple claimed bravely.

Elsewhere in the Dublin championship, Stephen Cluxton appeared in the half back line for Parnells in their encounter with St Sylvester’s.

The Dublin inter-county goalkeeper, and captain, donned the No.6 jersey and led a rousing team-talk at the break but Sylvester’s were too good and won out 0-19 to 0-6.
