There were good times, too.
Van Gaal, buoyed by Champions League qualification at the end of the 2014/15 season, was in high spirits at the club's black-tie Paler of the Year awards ceremony.
Both van Gaal and Giggs were engaged in a bidding war for the opportunity of playing with Dwight Yorke at a charity golf event.
The Dutchman looked to have sealed it, but then Giggs had to come in with an even bigger bid. Van Gaal fired back by cracking him with a forceful slap to the back of the Welshman's bonce:
Giggs took the smack well on the night and responded well when Irish comedian and impressionist Al Foran reminded him of the incident.
The pair crossed paths at a United Legend's event on Friday and Foran cracked out his van Gaal impression for the recently appointed Wales manager:
FORAN/VAN GAAL: "Don't out-bid me in any auction or I will slap you harder than I slapped you at the end of year awards!" GIGGS: (Laughing) "Who told you to say that?!" FORAN/VAN GAAL: "Louis. Louis did!"https://twitter.com/ImpressionistAL/status/967130107801489410 Bringing back strange memories for Giggs.
