A Premier League footballer has been arrested in North London on suspicion of rape, as reported by Telegraph Sport.

The report claims that the player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is in his late 20s and is currently in custody being questioned over an alleged attack which is said to have taken place last month.

Scotland Yard confirmed in a statement that the footballer had been taken into custody in the early hours of Monday (July 4). It reads:

“On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,” the Met Police said in a statement. “It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022.”

Officers added that the man was arrested “at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody where he remains”. “Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

Telegraph Sport add that it remains unclear if the player – who is said to be ‘internationally renowned’ – will take part in his club’s pre-season fixture schedule. He is also due to play at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
