New airport claims heap even more embarrassment on Scotland’s Euro 2016 slump

Late on Friday night (early on Saturday morning), images began to emerge of disgruntled Scottish players lolling around Tbilisi International Airport following their 1-0 defeat to Georgia.

Some 36 hours later and the Scots had to take on world champions Germany at Hampden Park.

Gordon Strachan’s men gave the Germans a good rattle but they lost 3-2 and are now four points behind Ireland, in the Euro 2016 Qualifiers, with two games to play.

The SFA has copped some flak for not having a plane, or a back-up plan, ready.

Former Scottish international Pat Nevin has added his voice to the complaints and, at the same time, revealed just where the defeated players were chowing down in Tbilisi.

‘After the game,’ Nevin told The Scottish Sun, ‘they had two or three hours milling about in the airport afterwards, the players were milling about with the fans, with the journalists.

‘But there was one piece of good organisation — the players lined up very well in front of Burger King, where they ate. That’s what they had, burger and chips.

‘They had to refuel. There was no other food for them to have. Where were these sports scientists who should have been checking everything that we have been hearing about?

‘I was really, really disappointed with the organisation. The players can’t say a word about it because they lost. It’s up to someone else to stand up for them.’
