Manchester United’s starting XI with their final two transfer targets is absolutely fearsome

Surely good enough for a tilt at the title

Patrick McCarry

Two new arrivals and Manchester United are closing in on two more.

Jose Mourinho may have been frustrated by United’s slow start to transfer season but Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku are now signed up and settling in.

Mourinho’s two other main targets are Chelsea centre midfielder Nemanja Matic and Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic. While reports suggest Matic could sign before the end of the month, the Perisic situation may drag on a while yet. Versatile Monaco star Fabinho has also been linked – he can play in defence or midfield.

The United squad is relatively settled with Wayne Rooney, Adnan Januzaj and the released Zlatan Ibrahimovic the major departures. Ashley Young has been linked with a move away and two Italian sides enquired about securing Anthony Martial on loan but both are on the club’s preseason tour.

Were Mourinho to get the Matic and Perisic deals over the line, the United starting XI would look pretty intimidating and one that were certainly capable of mounting a title challenge.

MANCHESTER UNITED STARTING XI

This would leave the likes of Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini to choose from as subs.

Alternatively, United could line up with none of those 11 players and still look pretty decent.

ALTERNATIVE UNITED XI

And that still leaves Joel Pereira, Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo, Demetri Mitchell, Axel Tuanzebe and a host of academy stars on the outside, looking in.

There will surely be no complaints from Mourinho now if his preferred transfers go through and he gets 25 to 30 quality players to call on over the 2017/18.

We jest, of course. Mourinho will definitely complain.
