Every media outlet should have a daily Sam Allardyce slot.
It’s nothing to do with any activity in the transfer market but he felt the need to point out on talkSPORT that he wanted to sign Pierre Emerick Aubameyang when he was manager at Everton. I saw him first, sort of thing.
Allardyce provided typically pointless insight on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast when he said he was looking at the possibility of bringing the Gabon international to Merseyside in the one January transfer window the manager spent at Goodison Park.
Hardly a find. Allardyce was in charge of Everton in the 2017/18 season. Aubameyang was 28 then. He was in his fifth and final season at Dortmund. The campaign before, he scored 31 goals in 32 league games in the Bundesliga. This wasn’t some gem he had uncovered before anyone else started noticing his talent. This was one of the most sought-after attackers in Europe who was well out of Everton’s – and certainly Sam Allardyce’s – reach and, in that same window, Arsenal bought him anyway so why the f**k are we still talking about this?
Transfer news…
Manchester United are said to have upped their interest in Dutch attacker Steven Bergwijn with a £25m. The PSV wide man, who plays mostly on the left or right of a front three, has contributed nine goals and eight assists in just 17 league games this season and, at just 21, has the world at his feet.
Bergwijn is now playing for the Netherlands but Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly keen on his services which could well appeal more to him at this stage of his career. The draw of United isn’t easy to put into perspective though. (Sun)
Manchester United, meanwhile, have held firm in the face of interest from Arsenal in defender Eric Bailly. According to the Daily Mail, Unai Emery was enquiring about the prospect of bringing Mourinho-signing Bailly to the Emirates on loan but it has been rejected already from the Old Trafford hierarchy.
More shit news for Everton, other than missing out on Aubameyang, is that l’Equipe are running the story that PSG are bidding for Idrissa Gueye. The energetic midfielder who was running the show at Villa before moving to Goodison has been a massive hit with fans on Merseyside but it would be hard to ignore interest from one of the richest clubs in the world.
But what a time to be an Arsenal fan.
With the pursuit of James Rodriguez ongoing, the Independent are now reporting that Denis Suarez is a likely acquisition in this window. The Barcelona midfielder is being chased for a loan deal and, at 25, has a lot more to his game than he’s shown so far.
