Liverpool win race to make Virgil van Dijk the most expensive defender in football history

What a signing! And what a fee!

What a statement signing.

Despite intense competition from Chelsea and Manchester City, it is Liverpool – and specifically Jurgen Klopp – who have successfully managed to convince Virgil van Dijk to join their club from Southampton this summer.

The Dutch defender has been the most prized defensive asset of the transfer window, with both Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola targeting the player as the perfect fit to strengthen their back lines ahead of next season.

What makes the 25-year-old such a rare talent is his combination of physical strength, speed, leadership, and vitally, his skillful playmaking from the back. He brings the ball out of defence with imperious ease, and has a fine range of passing.

Sadly for both Guardiola and Conte, the Mirror report that Klopp has won the race to sign the player by convincing him of the overall project at Anfield. Van Dijk is said to be enamoured by the German’s enthusiasm and ambitious plans.

Liverpool are now expected to lodge a £60m formal bid to Southampton to match City’s estimation.

£60m.

The fee will make the Saints’ skipper the most expensive defender in the history of the game. He is also expected to pocket £200,000 a week as part of the deal.
