Liverpool have taken measures to combat the "too much, too young" culture supposedly prevalent in English football by introducing an academy wage cap. According to The Daily Telegraph, the club have decided it will no longer pay more than £40,000 a year to 17-year-old first season professionals. That may seem like a lot of money for a teenager, because it is, but in a market where clubs are reportedly offering 16-year-olds £11,000-a-week, it represents something of a bold measure for the Merseyside club. The figure will increase with bonuses, such as appearances for the U23 side, making the first-team or going out and playing games on-loan. Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur are understood to have enforced a similar policy in recent seasons. Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, who recently spoke out against the culture of greed among young players, will be delighted if his former club follows a similar policy.
