Virgil van Dijk set for the bench as Klopp rings changes for Liverpool’s trip to Huddersfield

What is Klopp playing at?

There will be rotation.

Jürgen Klopp is set to make a lot of changes to his Liverpool side for tonight’s match against Huddersfield.

Liverpool’s midfield for the past two games has featured Emre Can, Georginio Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but tonight Jordan Henderson and James Milner are set to make their way back into the starting XI. These changes would indicate that Emre Can will be given a rest.

The most notable change is the absence of Virgil van Dijk, who will be replaced by Ragnar Klavan in defence. Liverpool are shaky in defence at the best of times, it’s unlikely that their supporters will be filled with joy at the news that Van Dijk is going to be rotated.

Liverpool will welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield on Sunday and will want a full strength team available for selection. With Huddersfield a less daunting task than Spurs, it seems Klopp is hoping a team featuring some fringe players will be able to get them over the line when they line up against his old friend David Wagner’s side.

Danny Ings is also rumoured to be pushing for a start tonight, suggesting that Roberto Firmino will be given a rest before the Spurs game. Many would argue that he is their most important – not best – player for the way Klopp wants Liverpool to play. While keeping him fresh is important, it is a big risk to rely on Ings considering how little he has played over the past year or two.

Liverpool fans will probably not be best pleased come 7 o’clock tonight when the teams are announced.
