Late Denmark goal makes Ireland’s task that bit harder

Niall McIntyre

Ireland will need to beat either Switzerland away or Denmark at home now.

A late Yusuff Poulsen goal earned Denmark a priceless home win over Switzerland in their Group D Euro qualifier on Saturday night to put them in the driving seat of this group.

And it puts Ireland in an extremely difficult position.

That’s because if the remaining fixtures go as predicted – with Denmark expected to beat Gibraltar at home and Switzerland expected to beat both Georgia at home and Gibraltar away – then Ireland will need to beat one of the big guns. That’s either Switzerland away or Denmark at home.

Here’s the lie of the land now.

The only positive you could take from it all is that this is still in Ireland’s hands. On the same note, the last time we needed a home win against Denmark ended in a 5-1 loss.

The performance against Georgia on Saturday also doesn’t bode well and with a win needed, you would imagine the calls for Aaron Connolly to start on Tuesday will grow even louder.

Remaining fixtures

Switzerland v Ireland (Tuesday, 7.45pm)
Gibraltar v Georgia (Tuesday, 7.45pm)
Switzerland v Georgia (November 15, 7.45pm)
Denmark v Gibraltar (November 15, 7.45pm)
Ireland v Denmark (November 18, 7.45pm)
Gibraltar v Switzerland (November 18, 7.45pm)
