Joey Barton’s playing days may be over, but it looks like he’ll still be on our TV screens.
In April, Barton was suspended by the Football Association for 18 months after admitting betting charges, and the 34-year-old has yet to confirm whether he will continue playing.
However, regardless of whether he hangs up his boots or not, the former Manchester City midfielder could easily end up having a career in punditry.
The controversial footballer might not be to everyone’s tastes, but he’s articulate and not afraid to voice his opinion. English football punditry could probably do with a few more figures like that.
Barton also isn’t afraid to be wrong, and that can end up sparking a debate. Like this claim he made ahead of the final games of the Premier League season.
The former Newcastle United and QPR midfielder was on BT Sport Score on Sunday, and claimed that the current Liverpool side is “the worst” he has played against in the Premier League at Anfield.

Barton played against Liverpool at Anfield in March, in a game Burnley lost 2-1.
However, Liverpool went on to qualify for the Champions League with Sunday’s 3-0 win against Middlesbrough.
Barton has played against Liverpool several times at Anfield during his career, but surely Jurgen Klopp’s team aren’t the worst side from that time? Roy Hodgson’s side from 2010 springs to mind.
Barton also said John Terry’s elaborate substitution and guard of honour during Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Sunderland was “embarrassing.”
