Javier Hernandez has suffered a bizarre injury that has ruled him out of the opening weeks of the season.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker fractured his right hand after falling down the stairs at home. Hernandez has undergone surgery and will miss the first two games of the Bundesliga season.
The Mexican has been in great form for the German side since joining from Manchester United last August, scoring 26 goals in 40 games. Hernandez is expected to be back for Leverkusen’s game against Hamburg on September 10.
The 28-year-old will be joined on the sidelines by Leverkusen captain Lars Bender, who injured his ankle against Brazil in Germany’s gold medal match at the Olympics.
While Hernandez’s injury was suffered in unusual circumstances for a footballer, it’s not quite as innocuous as Andy Carroll injuring his ankle attempting to put on a shoe.
Or Rio Ferdinand hurting himself after leaving his leg resting on a coffee table for hours while watching TV.
