Make no mistake about it, Gary Lineker wasn’t a happy man to learn that Claudio Ranieri had been ditched by Leicester City last week.
After his famously under-enthusiastic response to his appointment, Lineker was won over by the Italian as he guided the Foxes to league glory last season.
After learning of his departure last week the Match of the Day host described the timing of his dismissal as ‘inexplicable, unforgivable and gut-wrenchingly sad’. He later admitted to shedding tears at the news.
Days later and Leicester were embarking on the first game of the post-Ranieri era. Liverpool’s were the visitors to the King Power, and found themselves fall behind to an opener from Jamie Vardy.
Tweeting his response to the goal, it was clear that Lineker hadn’t lost his sense of humour after the events of the last week.

Leicester went on to double their lead through a beautifully struck Danny Drinkwater goal. In the second half, Vardy put them three goals to the good as he nodded home his second of the match.
Philippe Coutinho would pull a goal back, but Leicester were home and hosed. A vital three points for the champions as they look to beat relegation. A sentence that still seems very strange.
