€106 million splurge on two players to bring Manchester United summer spending to a close

Deep pockets

Patrick McCarry

Sergio Ramos

David Moyes must be wondering why he never received such financial backing.

Manchester United are set to take their summer spending to €200m with the signings of a defender and a striker, according to several news outlets this morning.

Louis van Gaal wants a proven Premier League scorer and wants to jump the queue [of Liverpool basically] to bring Christian Benteke to Old Trafford. As many, many of us know by now, the Aston Villa striker can leave the club if a suitor matches his £32.5m [€46m] release clause. [The Sun]

Over in Spain, AS report that United are willing to accept Sergio Ramos will not come cheap. Real Madrid have said they will not let their newly appointed captain leave but a ballpark figure of €80m has been floated in the press.

United were hoping to get the Spanish defender for €40m but will up it to €60m, especially if Manchester City secure Nicolás Otamendi from Valencia.

Juventus v UC Sampdoria - Serie A

United do not appear to have had any interest in Arturo Vidal, this summer, despite being heavily linked to him last season. Arsenal threw their hat in the ring for the Chilean midfielder but La Cuatra believe Bayern Munich have lined him up for a €40m move.

Tottenham have finally seen sense and will offload Roberto Soldado to Sevilla. The amazing part of this tale is surely the fact that the La Liga side are willing to pay £11m [€15.75m] for the misfiring striker. [The Mirror]

Napoli have put the kibosh on any transfer moves for Gonzalo Higuain. Despite being dreadful in the Copa America final, the Argentine is integral to the Serie A side’s plans. [Talksport]

Sky Italia confidently report that Arsenal have bid £22m [€31.5m] for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani. With Nacho Monreal apparently close to the Gunners’ exit door, Arsene Wenger is shoring up his defence in plenty of time.
