Cristiano Ronaldo is the overwhelming favourite to win the Ballon d’Or after a very productive 2016. The Real Madrid superstar scored the winning penalty in the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid, and captained Portugal to Euro 2016 glory.
The 31-year-old wasn’t at his best for either victory, and went off injured in the Euro 2016 final against France. But he made a telling contribution in the semi-final against Wales, scoring a towering header, and held his nerve in the decisive moment for his club.
Ronaldo could also add the Fallon d’Floor to his third Ballon d’Or crown if no-one can top this dive before the end of the year. A dive that was so awful it’s actually good.
During Sunday’s 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao, Ronaldo went on a dribble around 25 yards from the opposition’s goal, and threw himself to the ground in theatrical fashion.
The referee was standing close-by and was completely unconvinced, despite Ronaldo’s protests.
A truly terrible attempt. You’re better than this, Ronaldo.
