Chelsea and Manchester City players among Premier League stars with most fake Twitter followers

Tom Victor

Most of us aren’t surprised to see the biggest names in the Premier League boast upwards of one million Twitter followers.

But some of the lesser lights often have…let’s say suspiciously high follower numbers.

Now the Premier League players with the highest percentage of fake fans have been revealed, and it’s not good news for a couple of players from the league’s bigger clubs.

Chelsea goalkeeper Marco Amelia has yet to play a single minute for the first-team, yet still boasts a huge 195,000 followers on Twitter. But according to research from sports betting social network Better Collective, more than half of them are fake.

But that’s nothing compared to Fernandinho, who has more fake followers than Amelia has followers full stop. Some 40% of the Man City man’s 1.1m followers are less than legitimate.

Better Collective have also looked at the profiles of entire squads to find out which Premier League clubs have the most fake followers collectively, and it’s largely in keeping with the makeup of the table.

The current top five are the five clubs with the most genuine followers, while bottom-half sides Norwich City (32.59% fake), Crystal Palace (32.5%) and Bournemouth (31.64%) bring up the rear.
