Brussels bomber ‘stole ex-Inter Milan footballer’s identity’ to travel through Europe

Reports in the Italian press claim the man responsible for the horrific attack on a Brussels train station travelled through Europe using the identity of a former Inter Milan footballer.

Khalid El Bakraoui, whose attack on Maelbeek Metro station killed 13 people, had been travelling with documents associated with former Nerazzurri youth player Ibrahim Maaroufi, according to Gazzetta World, who published this photo of the pair.

El Bakraoui used the fake passport to travel through Italy and also rented an apartment in Belgium under Maaroufi’s name.

The 27-year-old footballer, a Belgium and Morocco youth international, only made six appearances for Inter before beginning a nomadic trek around Europe that included a 2011 trial with Leeds United.
