Bruce Grobbelaar reckons his amateur Canadian goalkeeper is better than Simon Mignolet

Bruce Grobbelaar is no fan of Simon Mignolet.

The Liverpool legend has a track record of criticising those who have succeeded him in the Reds’ goal, once saying the hero of Istanbul, Jerzy Dudek, looked like “a starfish with jelly legs”.

He has made his feelings on Mignolet so clear that the Anfield club have asked him to stop talking about the Belgian, but that has not stopped the Zimbabwean from having another cut off the Liverpool stopper.

Grobbelaar, who lives in Newfoundland, claims he is currently coaching a goalkeeper who is superior to the Belgian.

“I’ve had my criticism of him for two or three years, I even got pulled in and asked not to criticise him so openly.

“I’ve said that he is a goalkeeper who is a great shot stopper, but he is not the overall package. The overall package is good with your feet and coming out and commanding your area,” said Grobbelaar.

“I’ve got a goalkeeper in Canada, a 24-year-old, who does this better than Mignolet does and is just as good of a shot stopper. He is more of a package than Mignolet is.”

Mignolet had his struggles last season, and was the subject of much abuse from fans and pundits (like Grobbelaar), but has been much improved this season, conceding 18 goals in 13 matches.

However Grobbelaar believes Jurgen Klopp will be shopping around for a goalkeeper in January, although he neglected to put a price on the head of his Canadian prospect.

“I think he is looking at it,” he said. “There are a couple of goalkeepers in the German league that he is looking at so I can see that might be one of his first signings.”
