Borussia Dortmund use Ilkay Gundogan departure statement to troll Manchester City

Dortmund lose a key player... again

Robert Redmond

You can’t blame Borussia Dortmund for being a bit annoyed.

The Bundesliga side have lost Mario Goetze, Robert Lewandowski and, most recently, Mats Hummels to Bayern Munich, and have been unable to prevent Ilkay Gundogan joining Manchester City.

The German midfielder has become Pep Guardiola’s first signing for the Premier League side, joining on a four-year deal, for a reported fee of £20m. Dortmund don’t appear to be taking the news well, and used Gundogan’s departure to land a few not so subtle digs on both City and the player who spent five years at the Bundesliga club.

A statement on Dortmund’s Facebook page thanks Gundogan for his service to the club and wished him well in Manchester, but not before highlighting his ongoing injury troubles, and City’s underwhelming league campaign last season.

“Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and Ilkay Gündogan will go their separate ways in future. The midfielder, who is currently suffering from a knee injury, will leave the eight-time German champions in the summer to join Manchester City, who finished fourth in the English Premier League last season, on 1 July 2016.

“The two clubs reached an agreement and the details of the transfer will remain undisclosed.”
