Arsenal target Alexandre Lacazette scored a hat-trick this weekend because of course he did

Fans want Wenger to spend and spend now

Arsenal’s main problems might lie in defence, but there have been calls for an established striker throughout the summer.

Arsene Wenger’s team may have scored three at home to Liverpool, but two of those goals came when they were already 4-1 down, and not all opponents will have an Alberto Moreno to run at.

Alexis Sanchez had a quiet game up front with Olivier Giroud still recovering from his Euro 2016 exploits, and Theo Walcott unconvincing despite opening the scoring.

With that in mind, it probably wasn’t a good day for Alexandre Lacazette to score a hat-trick for Lyon – not if your name is Arsene Wenger, at least.

Arsenal saw a bid for the French striker turned down earlier this summer, with Lyon holding out for more than the £29.3m offered.

Pressure has grown for the club to dip back into the transfer market following the 4-3 defeat at home to Liverpool, with centre-back Shkodran Mustafi already thought to be a target.

With rivals spending big this summer, the consensus is that Arsenal need a new defender and a new forward – £30m midfielder Granit Xhaka just isn’t enough for a lot of people.

Calls for a bid had already grown when West Ham dropped out of the race for the 25-year-old, who narrowly missed out on a place in the French Euro 2016 squad.

And those calls have grown louder, both on Arsenal Fan TV and on Twitter, but they’ve started to carry a tone of resignation.

Arsenal have already spent close to £35m this summer on Xhaka, Rob Holding and Takuma Asano. They now have just over two weeks to add to that total.
