Anthony Martial really enjoyed Manchester City’s Champions League exit

Once a red...

For the first time in his career, Pep Guardiola has failed to take a club beyond the Champions League last 16 stage.

A 3-1 defeat in Monte Carlo for Manchester City, following their 5-3 win at the Etihad three weeks ago, saw them bow out of the competition on the away goals rule.

This means that England’s only remaining representatives in European competition this season are Leicester City and Manchester United – albeit Jose Mouriho’s side are in the Europa League.

Ahead of his team’s second leg against FC Rostov on Thursday evening, United’s Anthony Martial was clearly keeping a close eye on Monaco’s victory. The Frenchman, who will play no part against the Russian team due to injury, was clearly delighted to see the Ligue 1 leaders triumph against City – as one two-word tweet from him showed.

‘Oui Baka,’ Martial tweeted seconds after Monaco scored their third and final goal of the game courtesy of Tiemoué Bakayoko.

Martial moved to Old Trafford from Monaco nearly two years ago and clearly still holds a soft spot for the club and some of his former teammates.

Naturally, his close relationship with some of the Monaco players was seen by some United fans as an opportunity to improve their squad. Just look at the replies to his tweet.
