What a main event

Joseph Duffy is set to headline his first UFC when he takes on Dustin Poirier at UFC Dublin.

But it could have been so different.

Conor McGregor has revealed that he pushed for a fight against Urijah Faber on the October 24th event to put a full stop at the end of The Ultimate Fighter 22 which sees both fighters coach a team of lightweights.

If The Notorious had his way, he would have taken on Faber next month and still go ahead with the featherweight title unification bout with Jose Aldo at UFC 194.

“Really, it would be nice to have a fight at the end of it,” said McGregor. “We could easily fit a fight in on the Dublin card in The O2 [3Arena] in October. Filming wraps at the end of September, I believe. I could go in and make light work of Urijah. I could maul him inside one round and be fresh.

“Then we could do the Jose fight towards the end of the year on one of these dates that’s being thrown around. They wouldn’t have it so we’ll just be coaches and that will be that.”

Ah what could have been.
