Sunday was a weird day for the All-Ireland senior hurling championship.
Cork absolutely throttled Westmeath with a record score of 1-40, just one year after Limerick throttled Carlow by 24 points.
The current setup sees the Joe McDonagh Cup finalists face the third placed teams in the respective Leinster and Munster hurling championships, and while Cork walloped Westmeath, Eddie Brennan’s Laois overturned Dublin just weeks after they defeated Galway to advance to the preliminary quarter-finals.

Laois won just the one game in Division 1B of the National Hurling League but will now play Tipperary after a 1-22 to 0-23 win over Dublin.

Charles Dwyer was fantastic on the day for Laois and GAA Hour regular and former manager Cheddar Plunkett said that he was at the epicentre of Laois hurling.
“Look, Charlie is the heartbeat of Laois hurling, has been since he was 14,” said Plunkett on Thursday’s GAA Hour Hurling Show.
“That’s a strange thing for me to be saying, but that’s the truth.
“I remember Charlie playing in an under-12 county final, that’s how far back I remember this player. Our club, (Portlaoise) was playing them. We put two players on him, we actually completely left one player free and put two on Cha just to stop him hurling.”
