Let it go Cristiano, it wasn’t your goal
Cristiano Ronaldo apparently texted Piers Morgan from the dressing room immediately after Portugal’s win over Uruguay to claim that he did in fact score his team’s opening goal.
Portugal secured their passage into the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Group H rivals Uruguay on Monday night.
But there was uncertainty over who had managed to bag the first goal, which came from a Bruno Fernandes cross that Ronaldo claimed to have got a touch on before it went into the net.
The striker wheeled away in wild celebration as he claimed the goal, but replays showed that he didn’t appear to get a touch on the ball, and the goal was awarded to Fernandes in the end.

After the game though, Ronaldo was apparently quick to inform his new best mate Piers Morgan that he had got a touch on the ball.
Speaking on Fox Soccer, ex-US men’s team captain Alexi Lalas said: “The breaking news is that Cristiano Ronaldo did not score despite his claims that it did touch him.
“I was just with Piers Morgan and he said that Cristiano texted him from the locker room saying that he believes that it touched his head. So, uhm, who knows.”

Speaking about the first goal, Fernandes said: “I don’t really think it matters who scored. The feeling at the time was that he (Ronaldo) touched the ball — I was crossing it to him — but what’s important was we moved into the next round and beat a very big opponent.”
The Manchester United midfielder ended up bagging a second goal in the game after putting away a stoppage time penalty for Portugal.
The win means that Portugal became the third team to reach the last 16 after France and Brazil.
It also leaves Uruguay needing to beat Ghana in their final game in order to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament.
