The Gallops – Episode 2: Joseph O’Brien

Conan Doherty

Joseph O’Brien never knew anything else.

His father is one of the most legendary trainers in Ireland. His grandfather before him was a trainer.

He was a jockey on a diet of wine gums and Red Bull but, with the height of him, it was going to be a torture to keep making weight as he got older.

Walking away from horse racing was hardly going to be an option though, was it? For some people, it’s in their blood.

O’Brien’s gallops at Owning Hill in Kilkenny are tough and unforgiving. They’re where champions are made. This is his fortress.
