WATCH: Shane Long breaks and sends Liverpool crashing out of the EFL Cup

Just like that

With 90 minutes on the clock, Liverpool fans were roaring at the fact that they’d not been given a penalty.

Seconds later and Southampton’s Shane Long was slotting under Loris Karius.

A half-time substitute for Jay Rodriguez, Long was always going to play a vital role in Saints’ strategy of soaking up the waves of late Reds pressure in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.

Because nobody breaks like Long.

Three days after turning 30, Long proved that he’d lost not one yard of pace as he sprinted the length of the pitch alongside his teammates and profited from some terrific vision from Josh Sims.

It was his third goal of the season.

It sent Saints to Wembley.

And it sets up a likely date with Manchester United who enjoy a 2-0 lead over Hull City as they prepare for the second leg of their semi-final tomorrow night.
